Technology and River Science - reading for understanding

Our topic is water and science. We have been learning to use text titles, sub-headings, diagrams, photographs/images, keywords and lead sentences to help us find the key ideas.

We read 2 books about water and the health of a river they are called Testing The Waters and Talking To The Rivers,

We had to write one paragraph about what the book is about and what it is telling us.

this is my work. :)

Did you know that there are many steps to test water?

In Reading this term so far we have been reading an information report called Testing The Waters. It mostly tells you all the steps to how you test the water to see if it is polluted or not.

Zoe's cold task, its so cold it hasn't even had time to defrost yet.

In class this term we have been writing a Narrative's, this is my "cold task. " A cold task is what we can write in 30 mins.
After I was finished with my cold task I went and did a self-assessment where I set my writing goals and work on it to make it better. I am working on learning figurative language and show not telling in my writing.

COLD TASK TERM 2 2022 NARRATIVE

Write a narrative, this could be a story your make-up or a whanau story you retell.

Name: Zoe Crichton

Picher this Acland 2024 you’re at the Zoo with your two best friends Emma and Rose. You're hiding from the animals that have escaped from their enclosures and are roaming the Zoo. Well, that was me, Sophia. Myself and my friends thought it would be a good idea to go to the grand opening of the new Zoo. Let me tell you the crazy story…

So it was around 9:00, 9:30 ish in the morning. The air was crisp and fresh there was a soft wind gently caressing our hair as we walked up to the entrance. Emma was telling us about his massive folbea of spiders as we gingerly walked to the front desk. “They are just so gross they have so many legs and for what reason!”

After 2 hours of looking at many, many animals and getting a lifetime of selfies it was time to see the lions. Roes was getting really excited at this point, hir dad was one of the keepers and was the one doing the feeding show But. just as we were turning a corner we heard the announcement “ Hello everyone the Zoo is going into lockdown I repeat we are going into lockdown go and hied, this is not a drill!

"Forgive and you will be forgiven." I think we can all use this message.

In class, we have been learning about forgiveness. We read a story about a man called Ngakuku and how he forgave a man who killed his daughter. here is my reading response

My reflection

I think I have learned how to truly forgive. And the only way you can truly forgive is with God's help.

My Survival Novel Response

In class, we have been reading a book called Hatchet. We had to write a reading response about what we think the author's message is. This is my draft so it may have some mistakes in it.

The book Hatchet is a fictional survival story about a 12-year-old boy called Brian. He was going to see his dad in a little plane when the pilot has a heart attack. Then the plane crashes in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. Brain has to survive by himself until someone comes to save him.

I think that Gary Paulsen ( the author ) is trying to tell us the readers that even if your in a bad situation you should always find the good in it and not make things harder by having a bad attitude. The reason I think this is because in the book Brian is in one of the worst situations anyone could ever be in. But he is still getting on with his life he is not making a big fuss and sitting in a corner crying. At the start of the story just after the crash, he is hurt and in so much pain but he still made a shelter and found food.

Another thing I think Gary is trying to tell us is that you can't just rely on your family your whole life you have to learn how to be independent. Altho it is good to have some seport you have to do some things on your own. In the story, Brian had no one to help him. He had to get his own food, he had to build his own shelter and he also had to make his own fire. The only thing he had was a Hatchet his mother gave him, a little Cave where he had made a shelter and a lake to help him.

To finish up Hatchet is mostly about Brian and all of the many challenges he went throw. I also think that Gary is trying to tell us that no matter the situation you can always find the good in it and crying or feeling bad for yourself is not going to help.
